|The tabernacle erected by Moses and the children of Israel was a portable temple. The Israelites used it during their exodus from Egypt. The best known temple mentioned in the Bible is the one built by Solomon in Jerusalem (2 Chr. 2-5). It was destroyed in 600 B.C. by the Babylonians and was restored by Zerubbabel almost a hundred years later (Ezra 1-6). Part of this templewas burned in 37 B.C., and Herod the Great later rebuilt it. The Romans destroyed the temple in A.D. 70.In the Book of Mormon, the righteous followers of God were led to build and worship in temples (2 Ne. 5: 16; Mosiah 1: 18; 3 Ne. 11: 1). Building and using a temple properly are signs of the true Church in any dispensation, including the restored Church in our day. The Kirtland Temple was the first templebuilt and dedicated to the Lord in this dispensation. Since that time templeshave been dedicated in many lands across the earth.|

WORLD DISASTER REPORT
Japan Earthquake & Tsunami – Update #9
On March 11, a record 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck near the Japanese city of Sendai. It generated a powerful 32-foot tsunami which struck northern Japan and caused widespread destruction to coastal areas and communities. Damage to two area nuclear power plants has caused a third emergency—the threat of nuclear radiation exposure.
More than 11,000 deaths have been confirmed.
More than 17,000 people are missing.
143,000 buildings have been damaged or destroyed.
Damage estimates are expected to exceed $300 billion, making this the most expensive disaster in history.
The nuclear reactors have stabilized, but the situation remains tense with the contamination of water, food, and the environment in the Fukushima area.
Many basic services have been restored; gasoline and heating fuel are still in short supply.
The government has begun building temporary housing.
The number of individuals in shelters has decreased to approximately 180,000.
Status of Church Members and Properties
All missionaries in Japan are accounted for and are in safe locations. Missionaries from the Sendai and Tokyo missions have been transferred to other missions within Japan and will remain there until the situation has fully stabilized.
Most members of the Church in the affected areas have now been accounted for, with no death or injuries reported. Priesthood leaders continue to search for other members who have not yet been located.
It is estimated that between 40 and 60 member families have lost their homes in the tsunami. Many still cannot verify the extent of the damage because of the difficulty of getting back into the devastated areas.
Area personnel and engineers from Church headquarters are conducting detailed structural assessments of all Church facilities in the affected areas. At least 23 buildings have sustained varying degrees of damage.
Church Relief Efforts
Members from Japan continue to reach out to the community and Church members affected by the earthquake to offer emotional and social support.
The Church has distributed over 70 tons of supplies, including food, water, blankets, bedding, hygiene items, clothing, and fuel.
Young single adults are volunteering their time to find missing members using the Internet, social media, and other modern means of communication. Many members are found each day with their help.
10,000 liters of fuel have been purchased and distributed to Church leaders, affected members, and other relief organizations.
Members are delivering aid via scooters provided by the Church to areas that are difficult to reach by car.
Service projects to assemble hygiene kits and cleaning kits are being organized in multiple stakes and wards in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka.
Over 40,000 hours of service have been donated by more than 4,000 volunteers.
