Through The Eyes Of American Indians
500 Nations Came To America – Before Columbus,
and ”Stayed In The Garden”.

TheFamily.com staff  recently returned from visiting The Ancient Hopewell’s in the Heart of America.  Some of these wonderful Native American Indians were of Jewish decent from Jerusalem and were a righteous people.  They built astrologically aligned earthworks, observed the Law of Moses and were highly intelligent astronomers.

This highly advanced people knew how to mine metals, iron and copper smelt, silver, and gold, pearls, grains and other precious minerals. They were wise in building mounds for their defense and to protect their families; a place above ground in which to bury their dead, and a holy place that mounted their sacred temples of worship.  Though government, the Smithsonian, some religions and conspiring men wronged and have intentionally destroyed much of their evidence to prove them savages, starved them by killing thousands of buffalo, presented them blankets infested with small pox killing over 80 percent of them, and discredited these people, still many evidences remain proving that they were highly religious and an intelligent civilization and wrote in ancient Hebrew writings which were found buried in these mounds and the “Bat Creek Stone” in Tennessee.  (SEE GLENN BECK VIDEO)

Get Rod Meldrum’s Book!

From the Garden of Eden to the New Jerusalem, Adam-ondi-Ahman to the City of Enoch,  the “Heartland” of North America has been the setting of sacred and significant events throughout human history.

By means of three hundred photographs, maps, works of art, scripture and commentary, the author introduces a growing body of evidence that suggests the very real possibility of a North American setting for The Book of Mormon.  See BOOK IMAGE GALLERY to see dozens of pages.

Thirty-six scriptural prophecies and promises alternate between descriptions of the ancient Nephite land and a latter-day “Promised Land”.  Following that premise, readers will carefully examine statements by the Prophet Joseph Smith regarding his views on Book of Mormon geography.

Newly emerging scientific information strengthens the assertion that large agrarian societies once flourished in North America at precisely the times of Jaredite and Nephite cultures.  This research, conducted mostly by non-LDS scientists is revealing a remarkable panorama of culture, achievement and destruction among these ancient peoples.

The research here compiled sparks the scope of archaeology, anthropology, architecture, fortifications, trade, religion, metallurgy, DNA, horticulture, transportation by sea and by land, geographic topologies, building materials, astronomical alignments, mythology and much more.

God created ‘the Indian Country’, this “promised land” of America.

Our Creator put it exactly in the right place.

We were put here by The Creator.

Our Native Americans hold the keys to our surviving this world.

If we return to righteousness, God will Bless America.

May we be Of One Heart in The Heartland of America.

A Gentleman Farmer – By: Dennis Adamson

A Gentleman Farmer

The same day that we went to Holly Sonntag’s garden we visited Mel and Terrie Richins at their home garden.  the family He calls himself Farmer Mel.

the familyGardening was his avocation while he owned a construction company that specialized in laying telephone cable in mountainous terrain and repairing phone lines.  He explained that his grandfather, father and mother were all gardeners, so he has been gardening all of his life.  He took the USU Extension Service Master Gardener course 12-14 years ago and later took the Advanced Master Gardener course on vegetable production.   He has a large garden on the south side of his north facing home where he grows quite a bit of corn, squash and other vegetables and herbs.  the family

After retiring and selling his business he turned part of the business land, that he had retained, into a small urban farm about 1/4 mile from his home.  the family At first he took his produce to a local Farmers Market, but soon found that he had enough neighbors who wanted to buy directly from him.  He serves about 75 neighbors and says that he has pretty much reached his limit.  He opens the farm on Saturday mornings to these families.  Some of his grandchildren help sell the vegetables to earn some spending money.  The old farm tractor and implements give it the real feel of a farm.  the family

He tries to grow 7 to 10 of the most popular vegetables.  He has found that if he doesn’t grow what his neighbors want they will go elsewhere.  We first viewed his home garden which he uses to supplement produce grown at his urban farm site.  His sweet corn is one of the most popular crops that he grows and he sells out every week.  He grows the triple sweet corn which is one of the newest varieties. the family

According to Larry Sagers, horticulture specialist for the USU Extension Service at Thanksgiving Point, triple sweet corn is 25% sugar-enhanced kernels and 75% super-sweet kernels.  He finds these to be some of the best on the market these days.  Mel says that he grows his corn in at least 4 deep long rows.  Another crop that is a favorite is the pickling type of cucumbers.  He says people no longer want to go to the work of growing and picking these.  Those that buy the cucumbers also want his dill to use to make dill pickles.  Others like the dill when cooking fish.  Other vegetables that are popular are carrots, onions, new red potatoes, green beans, tomatoes and eggplants.  Among other herbs sold are cilantro and garlic.  the family

He also likes to experiment with things he hasn’t grown before.  This year he is trying globe artichokes, peanuts and tepary beans.  He planted 10 globe artichokes.  the family He started these in his home in December and put them out in Wall-O-Waters in March because they take 170 days to maturity.  From these 10 plants he got 60-70 artichokes.  He keeps these under a shade cloth when the temperatures warm up and hopes to get more artichokes when it cools down later in the season.

He has 3 peanut plants between the artichokes and the tepary beans.  the family I tried these one year with limited results.  I decided it was more cost effective to buy the peanuts rather than trying to grow them in Utah.  If I still lived in South Carolina it might be a different story.

The 3rd new crop is tepary beans.  The tepary bean is native to arid regions in the Southwest US and Mexico.  It names come from the a native Central American language meaning “it’s a bean”  I could see the person asking the question, “What is it?” and getting the answer, “It’s a bean!”.   I can just imagine the native person thinking, “What do you think it is dummy, a watermelon?”.  It grows in areas where there are less than 16” of rain a year, which is usually what Utah has a year.  It is a bush type bean growing to 30” in height.  It is cooked like other dry beans after soaking them.  He has 2 rows of these.  One he waters and the other only gets moisture when it rains.  The unwatered one is growing pretty well, but the row that is watered looks much better. the family

One interesting concept that he has is planting sunflowers among his squash plants.  the familyHe feels they help shade them, provide a type of windbreak and he thinks they are pretty.

Another tip he gave us was that he that he grows all of his onions from seed.  He feels that when planting them from bulbs they tend to go to seed before the bulb gets a chance to gain size.  Beth Jarvis, writing on onions in Yard & Garden agrees.  “Though planting onion sets is the most popular way to grow them, you’ll have better results transplanting seedlings you start indoors ahead of time.”  Part of this is due to the fact that the onion is a biennial plant with vegetative growth the 1st year and flowering the 2nd year.  Mel grow both short, medium and long-day onions.  the family I won’t get into this point this week because it has peaked my interest in writing an article on onions next week.

I tip my hat to Mel and Terrie for the enthusiasm they have for gardening.   They have even started opening their home for gardening classes this year.  He also teaches several classes to other groups in different venues.  He loves answering gardening questions and helping people.  I have several people telling me that I need to do something like Mel.  I fear that it would then feel like work to me and not a relaxing hobby.

“And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.” Ps. 78: 24

(The reference here is to the manna, and it is called corn in the sense that it was food, or that it supplied the place of grain. It may also have been called corn from its resemblance to grain.  Corn in the Holy Bible refers to wheat or barley.  It is only in the US, Canada and some other countries that maize is called corn.  Maize was unknown in the Old World in biblical times.)

Next week: growing onions
