Remembering the Friend, the Brother, the Legend

On this the 35^th anniversary of Elvis Aaron Presley’s death, my heart and thoughts are turned to that day when we heard of his passing.

My family and I knew Elvis pretty well when we were young and worked at the same Hilton Hotel and on the same stage that he did.  We even stayed in the same hotel suite that Elvis stayed.

My brothers and I, The Osmond Brothers, and of course Marie, loved Elvis Presley and got to know him an several occasions.  When we would return to the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas to perform, Elvis would often have delivered backstage to us a beautiful bouquet of flowers designed in the shape of a guitar with a personal note welcoming us back.  When we performed there, the stage manager would sometimes give us a “code” that said, “The Boss is Upstairs”, which meant, “Elvis was watching the show from the light booth!”

 I remember the first time Elvis came to see us.  Yes, he always watched the show from the light booth of the theater because he would have been mobbed otherwise.  This night we heard that he was watching our show.  Boy, were we most anxious to do a good job as we honored Elvis showmanship, talent and his professionalism.  Our costume designer, Bill Belew, was also the same designer that made all of Elvis’s jump suits.  We also learned karate from Chuck Norris and knew that Elvis liked it also.  So here we were, The Osmonds, all dressed up in white jumpsuits similar to what Elvis wore, all six of us, and we hit the stage performing but glancing up to the light booth wondering if Elvis would liked it or not! Well, the show went well and believe it or not, Elvis came backstage to say hello and one of the first things he said was, “Hey, I love the jump suits!  Boy, that made us feel good!  We spent several minutes talking with Elvis backstage after the show with his body guards and my parents who were both there as well. Elvis was particularly interested in talking to our parents and he especially loved meeting my mother, Olive and gave her a big hug.  Elvis mentioned to her how much he missed his mother who had passed away.

Over the next few years, we had the privilege of seeing Elvis at the Hilton a few more times and I remember one particular evening before the show when Elvis called us backstage in our dressing room and I spent 20 minutes on the phone with him.  The operator called and said Elvis would like to talk to the Osmond Family.  As the oldest of the group, the phone was handed to me and I enjoyed our conversation together.  He said how much he enjoyed watching us and especially how we took the time to meet all of our fans.  He watched as our Father would escort the fans to the backstage door and allow them to come back single filed past our dressing room so we could sign all of their autograph requests.  The line up was so long that the hotel management had to cut them off so they could prepare the showroom for another show.  Elvis noticed how we met every fan and mentioned it to me and then said, “If I could do it all over again, I would do it just like you guys are doing and I would meet every fan and sign every autograph requested!   We all know how popular Elvis was and how hard it was to control his outgoing fans.  We talked a little more and he asked if he could talk to my mother, Olive.  When she got on the phone with me, he just opened up and expressed the love he had for his mother and said, “Oh how I love and miss my mother.”  He talked to my mother about how it is raising 8 boys and a girl and we had a great discussion.  He also told us, “I always wanted to be a preacher.”  He said how much he love the Lord and singing about Him with songs like “How Great Thou Art” and other songs.  We left the conversation with an invitation from Elvis for our entire family to come to his home in Los Angeles for a private barbeque.  The date would have been a week from today, 35 years ago!  Of course we never got to have that barbeque, but we believe that we knew why he wanted to meet privately with our family.

You see, Elvis had been reading and studying scriptures seeking a closer relationship with His Lord, Jesus.  A fan named Cricket Butler had often been waiting to see him outside his hotel and at an early hour in the morning out by the gate, she remained with hopes of meeting and talking with Elvis.  One night Elvis went outside and walked up to the gate and talked with her.  Cricket at a later date shared with me the conversation that Elvis had with her and what they were talking about.  It was about life and what it’s all about.  Cricket offered to give Elvis a copy of The Book of Mormon and as a Mormon, some of her beliefs telling Elvis that he ought to read it. Elvis accepted it and read it.  He not only read it, he wrote his comments in it as he read.

I was given this book after Elvis died.  I was told that those at Graceland did not want to have a Book of Mormon sitting around among Elvis’s remaining possessions and so they gave it back to Cricket.  Cricket was also a follower of our family’s music and said that Elvis really liked our family and even talked to Cricket about us.  Cricket said to me that, “I know Elvis would have wanted you to have this book because of how much he respected your family.”  The book had many special comments in it that Elvis had written in the margins. The book is now safely In the archives of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and anyone upon request can see this book which is only on private display.  If you do go and see it, you will see comments written in it by Elvis such as:

- “Yes! I know this is true!”

- By the side of a picture of the Gold Plates from which this book was translated Elvis wrote, “Gold Records… REAL ONES!”  (Yes, Elvis had many gold records but these were real gold records.)  

-The book records that “thou shalt have no other God’s before me.”  Elvis wrote, “Not me either!”  (Many fans called him King and worshiped him.)

- Elvis wrote, “And He ans-(wered) me!” to the scripture: “And my soul hungered; and I kneeled down before my Maker, and I cried unto him in mighty prayer and supplication for mine own soul; and all the day long did I cry unto him; yea, and when the night came I did still raise my voice high that it reached the hearvens.”

-And a special note towards the end of the book he wrrote, “My daughter Lisa is 9.  She needs this church.  Please help her!”

I know that some may say that I am trying to use Elvis to get people to join our church.  To you I say, “You are wrong! Our church is already one of the fastest growing churches in the world.” I am sharing the truth about a friend with important insight on his spiritual side of his life. Elvis had a good heart!  This is what happened.  These words were not made up.  You can see the book that he wrote these things in and read them for yourself!  And yes, I would love to have everyone read this book.  It is true.  Much of it happened right here in America with many evidences coming forht as to the whereabouts!  The book also gives us warnings for our day that must be heeded in order to survive life’s purposes.

YES, I am pleased to have known that spiritual side of Elvis and how he wanted to know more about life and the Lord! He was contiasking for MORE FAITH!

I kept this book in my house for a few months after I received it but when others found out about it, they desired to handle it and to hold it.  I became worried that someone might take it from me so I told my wife Suzanne that I wanted to give it to her uncle, Elder Rex Pinegar, who is a general authority of our Church so he could secure it in the vaults of the Church in Salt Lake City, Utah where upon request, others may see it.

We later also learned from Cricket that Elvis had also read the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price which are two more doctrinal books of our church.  Elvis  also met with two different sets of missionaries and had the missionary discussions taught to him in Hawaii and in the states.

In follow up to Elvis’s request to help Lisa, I had only one copy of this book made with Elvis’s writings and with my brother Donny’s help and his contacts, had it delivered to Lisa Presley’s publicity agent at her office.  Donny knew her and felt she was a good way to get it to Lisa.  We have never heard a word from anyone since.

I have left notes on Lisa’s Facebook site, had other fans talk to her about the book and yet have heard nothing.

I know that Elvis is in the “Spirit World” where we all go to dwell until judgment day.  That is where my parents are also and I just know that they have probably gotten together with Elvis and renewed old acquaintances.

I invite everyone to read this book, to know that it does not take away from the Bible which we also believe, but it is another witness that fulfills prophecy in John 10: 16 of the Bible where it says: “And ^{other sheep} I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be ^one fold, and one shepherd.”  Jesus is the Shepherd and we are all His sheep.

These people who recorded these writings in the Book of Mormon left Jerusalem about 400 B.C. because the Lord said it was going to be destroyed.  They were taught how to built a boat and they traveled across the oceans to America.  This book also records the visitation of Jesus Christ and his appearance to these people in America after His Resurrection where Jesus said, in 3 Ne. 15: 17, 21 as recorded in The Book of Mormon,  “That other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one ^shepherd.  And verily I say unto you, that ye are they of whom I said: ^Other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one ^shepherd.”

Elvis read this book and second witness of Jesus Christ.  He believed it.  He took the missionary discussions twice and wanted the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I invite you all to read what Elvis Presley read and to receive a FREE copy of The Book of Mormon.  Our Prophet Joseph Smith  did NOT write this book.  He merely with the help from God translated it from the gold plates that were found buried in Hill Cumorah in New York.  After they were translated, the Angel Moroni who showed him where they were, took the gold plates back to protect them from the evil designs of man.

I wish Elvis’s ex-wife Priscilla and daughter Lisa Marie Presley my very best.  I do want to share more conversations and things that were said with them personally.  If any of you know them and can extend my invitation to them both, but especially with Lisa Marie, to come and see Elvis’s Book of Mormon and let me share privately those precious memories that I had about her father, Elvis Presley.

He is an eternal Friend, a Brother in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, A Legend we will never forget!!!

Native American Indians – This Is YOUR DAY!

“And now, the thing which our father meaneth concerning the grafting in of the natural branches through the fulness of the Gentiles, is, that in the latter days, when our seed shall have dwindled in unbelief, yea, for the space of many years, and many generations after the Messiah shall be manifested in body unto the children of men, then shall the fulness of the gospel of the Messiah come unto the Gentiles, and from the Gentiles unto the remnant of our seed—

This Promised Land

“We were already here in America when Columbus Came!”

-Some of the first Americans came from the North called the Jaradites, a group of people survived the days of the Tower of Babel when the languages were confounded. (Destroyed because of Secret Combinations)

-Another group was the Families of Lehi and Ishmael called the Nephites and Lamanites that left Jerusalem when the Lord told them that the city was going to be destroyed. The Lord instructed them in how to build a ship.  (They were later Destroyed because of Secret Combinations) 

“And when my brethren saw that I was about to build a ship, they began to murmur against me, saying: Our brother is a fool, for he thinketh that he can build a ship; yea, and he also thinketh that he can cross these great waters.

And thus my brethren did complain against me, and were desirous that they might not labor, for they did not believe that I could build a ship; neither would they believe that I was instructed of the Lord.

And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto them that they should murmur no more against their father; neither should they withhold their labor from me, for God had commanded me that I should build a ship.   1 Ne. 17: 17-18, 49, 51

 Now I, Nephi, did not work the timbers after the manner which was learned by men, neither did I build the ship after the manner of men; but I did build it after the manner which the Lord had shown unto me; wherefore, it was not after the manner of men.   1 Nephi 18: 2

And now, if the Lord has such great power, and has wrought so many miracles among the children of men, how is it that he cannot instruct me, that I should build a ship?

-The Lord led them to the promised land.

-They kept a written record.

“But, said he, notwithstanding our afflictions, we have obtained a land of promise, a land which is choice above all other lands; a land which the Lord God hath covenanted with me should be a land for the inheritance of my seed. Yea, the Lord hath covenanted this land unto me, and to my children forever, and also all those who should be led out of other countries by the hand of the Lord.

Wherefore, I, Lehi, prophesy according to the workings of the Spirit which is in me, that there shall none come into this land save they shall be brought by the hand of the Lord.

Wherefore, this land is consecrated unto him whom he shall bring. And if it so be that they shall serve him according to the commandments which he hath given, it shall be a land of liberty unto them; wherefore, they shall never be brought down into captivity; if so, it shall be because of iniquity; for if iniquity shall abound cursed shall be the land for their sakes, but unto the righteous it shall be blessed forever.

And behold, it is wisdom that this land should be kept as yet from the knowledge of other nations; for behold, many nations would overrun the land, that there would be no place for an inheritance.

Wherefore, I, Lehi, have obtained a promise, that inasmuch as those whom the Lord God shall bring out of the land of Jerusalem shall keep his commandments, they shall prosper upon the face of this land; and they shall be kept from all other nations, that they may possess this land unto themselves. And if it so be that they shall keep his commandments they shall be blessed upon the face of this land, and there shall be none to molest them, nor to take away the land of their inheritance; and they shall dwell safely forever.”   2 Nephi 1: 5-9

-Jesus was Crucified in the Old World. He was resurrected and visited the people in America, the land of Joseph, and to “other sheep” in various places of the world.

-Today, this ‘Promised Land’ of America is made up of many  nationalities of people who migrated here looking for peace and freedom.  Many came by the inspiration and hand of God.

-The Lord’s Church was once again re-established on earth. 

-Satan has great power over the people.

-The people again forget their God.  (Yet to be Destroyed by Secret Combinations – unless we learn from history!)

-The Lamanites (Native Americans) shall blossom as a rose.

-The earth was baptized with water in the days of Noah. It will then be baptized with fire, or The Holy Ghost.

-The Righteous will be spared and live the United order.

-The people are cleansed and build The New Jerusalem.

-Jesus Christ shall return to America once again wearing red apparel and live with us in peace for a thousand years in the New Jerusalem.

These are some important moments of history and prophesies for the future and is why one should read The Book of Mormon, an ancient record recorded on gold plates by our Native Americans.  They were translated by Joseph Smith and published in 1830 as The Book of Mormon for the Lords Church which was to be called, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Today was a special day several years ago.  It was on September 21, 1823, when the angel Moroni first appeared to the young prophet Joseph Smith in his farm home near Palmyra, New York.

As an angel of God, a messenger from heaven, this glorious personage visited Joseph Smith in physical reality. It was no dream, nor any kind of mystic occurrence.

It was a visitation. Two physical beings communed together—with Moroni, a resurrected person of flesh and bones, emerging from the eternal veil and paying repeated and never-to-be-forgotten visits to this mortal farm boy, Joseph Smith. (See JS—H 1:30–54.)

Many people no longer believe in the ministry of angels. But God does! He has used this means of communication from the days of Adam. Is there any reason why He should not continue the procedure in our day?

Angels ministered to many people in both Old and New Testament times, delivering messages from the Lord.

Abraham walked and talked with angels. An angel assisted Israel at the time of the Exodus. (See Ex. 14:19.) An angel fought an invading army in the days of the prophet Isaiah. (See Isa. 37:36.) When Daniel was in the lion’s den, an angel closed the mouths of the lions, and Daniel’s life was spared. (See Dan. 6:22.)

The angel Gabriel announced to the virgin Mary in Nazareth that she would become the mother of the Savior. (See Luke 1:30–33.) The same angel told the father of John the Baptist of his prophet-son soon to be born. (See Luke 1:13.)

When Joseph and Mary and the Divine Infant fled to Egypt, it was an angel who gave them direction, and upon the death of the wicked King Herod, the angel told them to return home. (See Matt. 2:13, 19–20.)

When the Savior spoke of the sanctity of little children, he said, “Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.” (Matt. 18:10; italics added.)

When Jesus neared His crucifixion, He could have called twelve legions of angels to His assistance if He had wished to avoid the bitter cup. (SeeMatt. 26:53.) Then, are there angels? Would Jesus have spoken like that if they were nonexistent?

At His resurrection, an angel rolled the stone away from the tomb. The women saw him there and heard him speak. (See Matt. 28:2, 5.)

When Stephen bore his final testimony to his persecutors, his face shone like that of an angel. (See Acts 6:15.)

An angel released Peter from prison. (See Acts 5:19.) Paul spoke of the tongues of men and of angels. (See 1 Cor. 13:1.)

The scripture clearly teaches that the purpose of the ministry of angels is “to call men unto repentance … by declaring the word of Christ unto the chosen vessels of the Lord, that they may bear testimony of him.” (Moro. 7:31.) And that is very pertinent with regard to Moroni.

The Lord also teaches that, over the ages, if angels have ceased to appear, it is because of unbelief and the spirit of apostasy among men. But where there is faith, the ministry of angels will last as long as the earth shall stand or “there shall be one man upon the face thereof to be saved.” (Moro. 7:36.)

Because the Lord desires to save mankind, even until the end, He revealed to John the Revelator that in the latter days angels would again fly through the midst of heaven as emissaries of the Almighty. John saw that one of these angels would fly from heaven to earth and would bring the everlasting gospel back to earth, it having been lost to mankind over the ages. (See Rev. 14:6.)

That angel was Moroni. He had lived in America some fifteen hundred years ago and was a prophet of God at that time. He and his father, Mormon, were historians of the people who formerly inhabited this land. They wrote the history of their nation, engraving it upon plates of gold to resist the ravages of time, for that record was to have significant importance in latter days.

To preserve it in safety, Moroni encased it in a box which he made of stone and buried it in the ground. Some critics regard this as a most peculiar thing to do, but it would have been more unusual if he had not done so. Why?

Because what he did was in full harmony with a well-established custom followed by various nations in the ancient world to preserve and protect their precious documents.

Records have been engraved on metal over a period of many centuries. A number now have been recovered. Such treasures have been found from Korea to Sri Lanka, from ancient Assyria and Persia to India, from Java to Bangkok, from Italy, from Greece, and from the Qumran caves in Palestine where the Dead Sea scrolls were obtained.

We declare that there is revelation today! There are apostles and prophets on earth now! They are inspired, and they do speak the word of God. Marvelous and repeated angelic visitations have taken place in modern times as God once again established His divine Church on earth, following a long period of darkness.

Moroni fulfilled two biblical prophecies by coming to Joseph Smith. John the Revelator saw an angel fly in the midst of heaven, bringing the everlasting gospel back to earth. (See Rev. 14:6–7.)

John further said that this angel would fly in the “hour of [God’s] judgment” (Rev. 14:7), which could only mean the latter days. This timing made it strictly a modern affair.

He came as predicted, and Moroni was that angel. His coming opened a new dispensation of the gospel of Christ, direct from God. It had no relationship to any other religious movement. It was a new and divine episode, a modern revelation from the heavens, a fresh effort on the part of the Almighty to introduce today’s nations to the gospel of His Beloved Son.

Amos of old, the inspired seer of the Lord, taught that God does His work through prophets. In fact, he said that God actually will do nothing without revealing His plans to His servants the prophets. (See Amos 3:7.)

Then what would God do about the angel bringing the gospel back to earth in modern times? There were no prophets on earth to whom he could come. The world no longer even believed in them. If the Lord would do nothing—not even send His angel to earth to restore the gospel—without the services of a living prophet, how could He accomplish His divine purpose? How could the angelic visitation predicted for the latter days be consummated if there were no prophets to receive it?

God could do only one thing, and that was to raise up a new prophet for this particular purpose, and this He did in the person of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr., who lived near Palmyra, New York, in 1823. It was this young man to whom the angel Moroni came.

In what way did the angel deliver the gospel to Joseph Smith, thus restoring it to public knowledge?

The prophet Isaiah explains. In the twenty-ninth chapter of his book, he tells of an ancient record that would come out of the ground in the latter days, in a time preceding the restoration of Palestine as a fruitful field. (See Isa. 29:17.) This record would be in the form of a book, he said, having to do with a people who had been destroyed suddenly. (See Isa. 29:5.)

Some words of this book, Isaiah predicted, would be taken to a learned man who would reject them. Then, he said, the book itself would be given to an unlearned man, whom we now know to be Joseph Smith, who fit Isaiah’s description for he had only a very meager formal education. In his hands, Isaiah said, this book would be published to the world by the miraculous power of God and would become a marvelous work and a wonder. (See Isa. 29:11–12, 14; JS—H 1:63–65.)

This book was that self-same volume prepared anciently by Mormon and Moroni, containing the simple and beautiful truths of the gospel in their fulness, as taught by the ancient American prophets. It is called the Book of Mormon. It was this book that Moroni made available to the world through the services of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Thus, this record, containing the everlasting gospel, restored to man the saving truths required for salvation, which alone comes through Christ.

Moroni had hidden that record in the ground some four hundred years after Christ, and he knew exactly where to go to recover it. He had encased it in a stone box and buried it, just as did King Darius and Emperor Sargon in their days.

Having thus hidden it away, Moroni was now chosen of God to recover it and deliver it to the new modern prophet for publication. In that way he brought the gospel back to earth, for the record contained the gospel in its simplicity and in its fulness. The record was there, it was the word of God, and it came about by the act of God. It was a mighty miracle of God.

So Moroni fulfilled two biblical prophecies in coming to Joseph Smith: the fourteenth chapter of Revelation [Rev. 14] and the twenty-ninth chapter of Isaiah [Isa. 29]. He did come to earth as an angel. He did deliver to Joseph Smith the golden record which had been prepared under the direction of Almighty God. It is a new witness for the Lord Jesus Christ; it declares, as does the Bible, that Jesus of Nazareth indeed is the Son of God, our Savior and Redeemer. That book is available to all mankind. A million copies are published each year, in more than a score of languages.

So, again, we testify that the Book of Mormon is true. It is the word of Almighty God, restored in this day by angelic ministry and by the direction of God himself. We testify that Moroni came as an angel on September 21 , 1823, revealing his ancient record and that he did so as a servant of Jesus Christ. Before its publication, he allowed twelve modern American citizens of good repute to examine the golden record so that they could bear witness of having seen or handled it.

We testify that Joseph Smith indeed was a modern prophet of God, raised up specially for the purpose we have described.

And most solemnly we testify that Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the Son of God, our Savior, our Redeemer, our Creator. We testify further that we are His ordained servants, and we speak by the power that he restored to us and has given to us in this day.

“Behold, because of their belief in me, saith the Father, and because of the unbelief of you, O house of Israel, in the latter day shall the truth come unto the Gentiles, that the fulness of these things shall be made known unto them.” 3 Ne. 16: 7

Unique book goes on display.

The world’s oldest multiple-page book – in the lost Etruscan language – has gone on display in Bulgaria’s National History Museum in Sofia.

The book dates back to 600BC

The small The Small manuscript, which is more than two-and-a-half millennia old, was discovered 60 years ago in a tomb uncovered during digging for a canal along the Strouma river in south-western Bulgaria.

It has  now been donated to the museum by its finder, on condition of anonymity.

Reports say the unidentified donor is now 87 years old and lives in Macedonia.

The authenticity of the book has been confirmed by two experts in Sofia and London, museum director Bojidar Dimitrov said quoted by AFP.

The six sheets are believed to be the oldest comprehensive work involving multiple pages, said Elka Penkova, who heads the museum’s archaeological department.

There are around 30 similar pages known in the world, Ms Penkova said, “but they are not linked together in a book”.

The Etruscans – one of Europe’s most mysterious ancient peoples – are believed to have migrated from Lydia, in modern western Turkey, settling in northern and central Italy nearly 3,000 years ago.

They were wiped out by the conquering Romans in the fourth century BC, leaving few written records.

The long debated question about bound metal records existing in the Middle East 2500 years ago as claimed by the Book of Mormon can now be put to rest.  Critics should take note and check that item off their list of objections to the authenticity of the Book of Mormon.
