- Crops have failed!
- Food prices have risen!
- We are living in uncertain times!
- Prophetic warnings of our day are here!
We are STILL suffering from Hurricane Sandy!
You buy insurance for everything else! Why not buy some food to insure that your family will survive?
Droughts in the U.S. have forced the U.S. Agriculture Department to slash its forecast for the nation’s corn crops to only 10.8 billion bushels, the lowest amount since 2006, TheBlaze reported last month.
“If that estimate holds, the federal government says it will be enough to meet the world’s needs and avoid shortages, but experts say food prices will almost certainly climb as corn is an ingredient in many products,” the AP reported.
These droughts, other global environmental events, and the food shortages they have caused have U.N. officials scared enough to warn that the world may soon face a food price “catastrophe.”
“We need to act urgently to make sure that these price shocks do not turn into a catastrophe hurting tens of millions over the coming months,” the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, and the World Food Programme said in a statement yesterday.
“We need to remain vigilant and prepare for the worst in the short run, while working on sustainable solutions for the long haul,” the statement adds.
The agencies claim poor and food import-dependent countries would be hit hardest by spikes in raw food commodities. They also argue world leaders need to take immediate action, including investing “much more in agriculture and social protection, including programmes that help poor people to access food that has become unaffordable in their local markets.”
“Until we find the way to shock-proof and climate-proof our food system, the danger will remain. In the short term, this has costs, not only for those directly impacted, but also for the international community at large,” the statement reads.
The US Department of Agriculture said the worst drought in half a century is expected to drive up the price of milk, beef and pork next year, according to The New York Times.
Some food prices, like chicken and turkey, are expected to rise as early as this fall.
“The poultry category is the smallest animal category, and we expect to see more of an effect this year because they grow the fastest and will be first to be impacted by higher feed prices,” said Richard Volpe, an economist with the USDA.
The data, released on Wednesday, shows increases in beef, dairy, eggs and pork in 2013.
“It can take up to nine months for rises in agricultural commodity prices to filter through into higher food prices in the stores,” said Paul Dales, senior US economist at Capital Economics Ltd., according to Bloomberg.
Meteorologists are predicting that conditions behind the drought will continue, putting crops at risk and raising food prices as well as the specter of a food crisis, according to Al Jazeera.
The Guardian noted that early this spring farmers planted 96 million acres of corn, the most in 75 years. A warm spring helped the crop, but the scorching heat and drought conditions of summer have ensured only 26 percent of the crop is rated good to excellent.
Al Jazeera noted that corn is a “mega-crop” involved in the production of everything from meat to cereal and fuel.
The US is the leading producer and exporter of corn, the Guardian noted. Corn accounts for four-fifths of the US grain harvest and exceeds China’s rice and wheat harvests combined. Corn prices have increased by nearly one half since the beginning of June and reached an all-time high in mid-July, said the Guardian.
The US Department of Agriculture predicts a sharp drop in corn exports, with prices for corn and soy beans already reaching record highs, said Al Jazeera.
The government said 88 percent of the corn crop and 77 percent of the soybean crop has been affected by the drought, according to The Times.
Lester R. Brown, the president of the Earth Policy Institute, wrote for the Guardian, noting that world stocks of grain will fall further near the end of this year, worsening an already precarious global food situation.
“The world is in serious trouble on the food front. But there is little evidence that political leaders have yet grasped the magnitude of what is happening,” he said.
This is Dennis Adamson, a Master Gardener to help “Strengthen The Family .”
This Monday I started my 2nd year of Advanced Master Gardener training. It is a 4 year follow-on to the Master Gardener program and has extensive requirements beyond that of the Master Gardener program. You have gotten to know me through my articles (links below) on my cold frame, greenhouse and tomatoes ripening in my workroom. I plan on writing a weekly gardening article for TheFamily to try to get each of you excited about the upcoming gardening season. Gardening can be one of the most rewarding hobbies that you can have. My grandchildren say that they like to come to my farm and pick the fruits and vegetables. My ‘farm’ is a 1/3 acre lot where I have maximized my growing space.
.
..
Why garden? (Alan says, “We should all return to our roots”. Ha! )
In this Friday’s newspaper was an AP articleby Christopher Rugaber and Jeannine Aversa showing how high food prices will soon spur inflation. Corn, soybeans, wheat and other grains have shot up since last summer. This raises the cost of feeding livestock which in turn raises the price of beef, poultry and dairy products. Bread and produce will also follow suit. Grocers who contained prices last year are expected to increase them this year. While most of us don’t have the land, time or energy to produce grain or livestock, we can grow fruit, herbs and vegetables, even if we live in apartments or have homes on small lots.
There are many other reasons, besides economics, to grow our own gardens:
.
.
..Nutrition: studies have shown that our nutrition improves when we grow our own produce
Exercise
Gives us a sense of accomplishment and helps individual development
Decreases stress
Improves our environment
Can ensure that our produce is grown organically, if so desired
A positive way to bond with your children and spouse
Helps build neighborhoods and communities, especially through shared excess produce or community gardens (yes, you too can learn to find hundreds of ways to use zucchini)
Teaches children responsibility and how nature works
Being out in nature has been found to increase our satisfaction with life
Isa. 51: 3 …”he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.”
Next week: Why it is important to know something about plant classification.
My mentor, Larry Sagers, says that there are only 2 kinds of people, “Those that are Master Gardeners and those that want to be Master Gardeners”. For those of you interested in the Master Gardener program, read the following:
The Master Gardener program was started by Washington State University in 1973 and is now found in all 50 US states and at last count in 3 Canadian provinces. The programs are usually administered by the county Extension Services. Utah County is fortunate to have 2 programs. The ones in Utah County start in September. The afternoon one is given at the Utah County Extension Service in Provo, UT under the direction of Adrian Hinton, the USU Extension Horticulturist. The evening program is at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, UT under the direction of Larry Sagers, the USU Extension Horticulture specialist at Thanksgiving Point. He also writes a weekly article on gardening for the Deseret News, a Salt Lake City newspaper and he has a garden program on KSL radio on Saturday mornings where individuals can call in to have their gardening questions answered. I did the Thanksgiving Point Master Gardener program in 2007.
The American Horticultural Society states: The Master Gardener program, conducted throughout the United States and Canada, is a two-part educational effort, in which avid gardeners are provided many hours of intense home horticulture training, and in return they “pay back” local university extension agents through volunteerism. Master Gardeners assist with garden lectures, exhibits, demonstrations, school and community gardening, phone diagnostic service, research, and many other projects.
Master Gardeners in Utah must complete 40 hours of classroom training, complete comprehensive worksheets and a final exam and do 40 hours of volunteer service to gain a certificate. The title is used only when providing unpaid service for the Extension Service or projects supported or approved by them. It is not intended for private gain or to promote a product, business or individuals. If you are interested in doing the Master Gardener program (no previous experience is needed, just a desire to learn more about gardening) contact your local Extension Service for the times and location of the closest ones to where you live.
When that emergency comes around, the MOST
important asset you need to protect
is YOU and THE FAMILY!
The Book of Revelations in the Biblewarns:“And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.”Rev. 16: 18
Several earthquake predictions predict The BIG EARTHQUAKE to happen SOON!
This is why we need to tell you about or New Sponsor,
At one time or another, nearly every family will face accidents, illness, unemployment, or other emergencies that will require them to depend on the resources they have stored.
Though we never know when we will face a challenge that will require us to depend on the resources we have stored, we know that the Lord has said,
In my week 46 article on emergency purification of water I wrote about the 72-hour kit recommended by city, state and federal government. These are primarily to get us through short-term emergencies that we can find ourselves in.
When we lived in Yorktown, VA the local government was always worried about the hurricane season. The month before the season usually started the stores would run sales on emergency items that you might need to ride out a tropical storm or lower class hurricanes. We picked up a NOAA weather radio, batteries and the like. Quite honestly I was disappointed that we never had one while we were there. One of the unusual features in the area was the railroad type crossing arms that were on each of the Interstate on and off ramps. I had no idea what they were there for. It was explained to me that they were to allow the highway patrol or other officials to direct the flow of traffic in one direction, on both sides of the Interstate, during an emergency evacuation of the area. The arms would prevent you from getting on or off in the wrong direction. What did happen while we were there was a tornado in the area. It occurred April 28, 2008. It damaged several businesses, homes, an elementary school, a strip mall and destroyed at least a dozen homes.
Just last week there were widespread hurricane-force winds, often exceeding 100 mph. These winds covered areas of California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. They toppled semi-trucks, trees, fences and power lines. Some homes were damaged from trees falling on them to the point they had to be condemned. Electricity was out for more than 48 hours in many of the affected areas. In a local TV report, one resident said that as soon as everything was back to normal he was going to start stocking up on emergency supplies.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) says:
“The first 72 hours after a disaster are critical. Electricity, gas, water and telephones may not be working. In addition, public safety services such as police and fire departments may not be able to reach you immediately during a serious crisis. Each person should be prepared to be self-sufficient – able to live without running water, electricity and/or gas, and telephones – for at least three days following a disaster. To do so, keep the following on hand and rotate supplies to keep them fresh:
Food:Maintain enough nonperishable food for each person for at least 72 hours.
Water: Store enough so each person has a gallon a day for 72 hours, preferably for one week. Store in airtight containers and replace it every six months. Store disinfectants such as iodine tablets or chlorine bleach, eight drops per gallon, to purify water if necessary.
First aid kit: Make sure it is well stocked, especially with bandages and disinfectants.
Fire extinguisher: Your fire extinguisher should be suitable for all types of fires. Teach all family members how to use it.
Flashlights with extra batteries: Keep flashlights beside your bed and in several other locations. Do not use matches or candles until you are certain there are no gas leaks.
Weather Radios: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio, with battery backup, portable radio or portable television with extra batteries: Telephones may be out of order or limited to emergency use. The NOAA weather radio, portable radio or portable television may be your best source of information.
Miscellaneous items:Extra blankets, clothing, shoes and money. Wear sturdy shoes just in case you need to walk through rubble and debris.
Alternative cooking sources: Store a barbecue or camping stove for outdoor camping.
Caution:Ensure there are no gas leaks before you use any kind of fire as a cooking source and never use charcoal (or propane) indoors. Gasoline-powered appliances should be filled away from ignition sources.
Special items:Have at least 72 hours of medications and food for infants and those with special needs. Don’t forget diapers.
Tools: Have an adjustable or pipe wrench for turning off gas and water, and a shovel or broom for cleaning up.
Pets:Assemble an animal emergency supply kit and develop a pet care buddy system with friends or relatives to make sure someone is available to care for or evacuate your pets if you are unable to do so. Be sure each of your pets has a tag with your name and phone number. Whether you decide to stay put in an emergency or evacuate to a safer location, you will need to plan for your pets.
Pay attention to directions from emergency managers, police and others and obey instructions in the event of an evacuation. Obtain a NOAA weather radio to receive alerts and learn the language of weather warnings:
A watch is issued by the National Weather Service when the risk of a hazardous weather or hydrologic event has increased significantly, but its occurrence, location, and/or timing is still uncertain.
A warning is issued when a hazardous event is occurring or has a very high probability of occurrence. Warnings advise of a threat to life or property.
An advisory is issued when a hazardous event is occurring or has a very high probability of occurrence. Advisories describe events that cause significant inconvenience.”
A site called The National Terror Alert Response Center states,
“There are many types of disasters and emergencies: floods, fires, earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes. In many cases, a 72-hour kit could mean the difference between life and death. It is estimated that after a major disaster, it may take up to three days for relief workers to reach some areas. It would be wise to consider a 72- hour kit that you could live on for 7-10 days. In such a case, if you live in a disaster prone area a 72-hour kit is the minimum you should have available. Plan your 72- hour kit according to your family’s size.” They have an extensive list for a kit at:
We have bare basics 72-hour kits in backpacks that can be grabbed quickly and easily carry on our backs if we need to evacuate our home.
From my Community Emergency Response Team training I learned other things that a homeowner should do to protect his or her home: secure the water heater into the adjacent wall. This is can easily be done with galvanized plumbers tape. Be sure to screw it into studs in the wall and not just the drywall.
.
.
As stated in the FEMA section, have a wrench to turn off the gas line into the home and know where and how to turn off the water into the home.
One thing that Alan did was have his house wired so that he can plug his gasoline powered generator into a plug on the outside of his home to run essential items like a refrigerator and freezer. I am considering doing the same for my own home since I have a gas generator that I use for camping.
We have a natural gas fireplace in our family room. I had heard that the switch would work to turn on the flame even with the power off. The last power outage we had I tried it and up the flame came. Of course the blower didn’t work. This would give us at least one room that would be warm in a power outage.
I was watching a program recently when it was asked how the person could sleep soundly during a terrible storm. The reply was, “Because I was prepared”. Let us find ways to prepare ourselves, as well as possible, for emergencies that may occur in our areas.
Alan has a few more emergency topics he wants me to address, but since the Christmas season is upon us I will do a couple of articles with some relation to the Christmas season.
“Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.” Ezek. 38: 7
“Our Heavenly Father created this beautiful earth, with all its abundance, for our benefit and use. His purpose is to provide for our needs as we walk in faith and obedience. He has lovingly commanded us to “prepare every needful thing” (see D&C 109: 8) so that, should adversity come, we can care for ourselves and our neighbors and support bishops as they care for others.
“We encourage families world-wide to prepare for adversity in life by having a basic supply of food and water and some money in savings.
“We ask that you be wise as you store food and water and build your savings. Do not go to extremes; it is not prudent, for example, to go into debt to establish your food storage all at once. With careful planning, you can, over time, establish a home storage supply and a financial reserve.”
“I tell you these things because of your prayers; wherefore, treasure up wisdom in your bosoms, lest the wickedness of men reveal these things unto you by their wickedness, in a manner which shall speak in your ears with a voice louder than that which shall shake the earth; but ifyeare preparedyeshallnotfear.” D&C 38: 30
We live in a most exciting and challenging period in human history. As technology sweeps through every facet of our lives, changes are occurring so rapidly that it can be difficult for us to keep our lives in balance! It is essential that we plan for the future with our personal and family preparedness!
Do you have “Family Home Storage”? Our Prophet has said:
“Our Heavenly Father created this beautiful earth, with all its abundance, for our benefit and use. His purpose is to provide for our needs as we walk in faith and obedience. He has lovingly commanded us to “prepare every needful thing” (see D&C 109:8) so that, should adversity come, we can care for ourselves and our neighbors and support bishops as they care for others.
“We encourage members world-wide to prepare for adversity in life by having a basic supply of food and water and some money in savings.
“We ask that you be wise as you store food and water and build your savings. Do not go to extremes; it is not prudent, for example, to go into debt to establish your food storage all at once. With careful planning, you can, over time, establish a home storage supply and a financial reserve.”

Good council from an ancient prophet once said, “O Be Wise . . . what more can I say.”
-They say, “The government will to take care of you”. “Trust not in the arm of flesh”. You and your family will end up having to take care of yourselves!
-Put some food, water, and money away for rough times that will come.
-Are your lamps full with “oil”? 2 Sam. 22: 29 “For thou art my lamp, O Lord: and the Lord will lighten my darkness.” (If you have a testimony and relationship with The Lord, He will guide you! HE is “The Way”!)
-Pray always! The Lord and the Holy Ghost will lead and guide you!
