There is no “Easy Button” For Us To Press To Make A Difficult Situation Better
My father and mother are 85 and 83 years old, respectively. I also have a disabled older sister. All three of them have just moved in with Sally and me permanently. They can’t do stairs, so Sally and I moved into our basement. We’ve joked that we were empty nesters exactly one month!
There is no “easy button” for us to press to make a difficult situation better. But I’ve heard somewhere that, “All these things shall give thee experience.” Our personal situation has made me reflect on laws and policies related to such matters. Frankly, I’m grateful our circumstances are such as to be able to help my folks and sister. I’d be heartbroken to think we couldn’t take care of anyone in our family.
But, atlas, not everyone can do so, and such family care is beginning to feel like a luxury these days. More and more of our elderly are dependent on government programs, not family. So as difficult as this is for Sally and me, we’ll count our blessings.
