PROFANITY & SWEARING!
Profanity, (as defined by Merriam-Webster), is “an offensive word” or “offensive language”. It is also called bad language, strong language, coarse language, foul language, bad words, vulgar language, lewd language, swearing, cursing, cussing, or using expletives. This use is a subset of a language’s lexicon that is generally considered to be strongly impolite, rude or offensive.
Which of the Lord’s Ten Commandments is probably broken the most frequently? I believe it would be taking the name of God in vain. (See Ex. 20:7.)
“Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God
in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless
that taketh his name in vain.”
“But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.”
I grew up in a home where neither my Father or Mother ever swore. They showed me, by example, of how to live my life without cussing or using fowl language. They were taught to: “Train up a child the way he should go and when he gets older, he will never depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
Suzanne and I have eight (8) sons and also never use bad language either in raising them. As a result, none of our sons use bad language either. Now, they have their free agency, but, they choose not to! We comment them. They have been ‘taught’. Even with agency, the odds are that our 26 grandchildren won’t either! It’s a PATTERN!
Some may say, what is the harm or end result of swearing? Jeremiah expresses one thought about it in this way:
“For because of swearing the land mourneth;
the pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up.”
“No parent can consistently teach faith in Christ who profanes the name of Deity. Profanity is never heard in the well-ordered home. Swearing is a vice that bespeaks a low standard of breeding. Blasphemous exclamations drive out all spirit of reverence.”
(President David O. McKay)
Judith Martin (“Miss Manners”) of the Washington Post says: “How does one deal with a rude person? Politely. I don’t believe in answering rudeness with rudeness under any circumstances.
“How is that accomplished? With the stare or smile. I do not recommend the snappy comeback and putdown.”
Politeness achieves much more than answering rudeness with rudeness.
“Be patient in afflictions,
revile not against those that revile.”
“Profanity is filthiness. A person is known as much by his language as he is by the company he keeps. Filthiness in any form is degrading and soul-destroying and should be avoided.” (President Joseph Fielding Smith)
If we are not most careful with our thoughts and speech, the words we use will use us. Language has its own ethics, and one who communicates truth is like a bright light in the darkness. We must nurture language like that.
“Obscenity, the open use of which used to be a mark of lower social strata, has somehow become acceptable in everyday conversation for everyday people.
“And yet, I am offended—not out of a sense of morality or of prudishness—but because foul language used casually in public comes close to the idea of a violation of privacy. I know that there are some around who feel assaulted by hearing it. I chose that word very carefully; certain language is an assault on the senses.
“Those who disagree are probably saying, ‘after all, it’s only words.’ But words are vehicles; they convey messages. And to some people, the message of profanity is a message of ugliness and aggressiveness and a disrespect for civil behavior. Too much of it is happening now on social networks!
“Bathroom and sexual obscenities can now be heard in certain popular songs on the radio, and even some magazines and newspapers have begun to print language that would have been unthinkable five years ago. This practice is usually defended under the name of ‘freedom.’ But whose ‘freedom’ is it? If the language of ugliness becomes so much a part of our society that it is impossible to escape no matter where one turns, then who is free and who isn’t?”
These assaults on the senses and the messages they carry do not elevate—they pull people down.
There is no place in Church or in any of our families for pessimism or negativism. We should be incurable optimists. Irrespective of the condition of a person, he who is a cynic, a pessimist, or negative has the least progress, happiness, and prosperity.
On the other hand, the Lord’s way is that the optimist with faith, who is positive, elevating, and edifying, is the individual in or out of the Church who is the most progressive, happy, and prosperous. The Lord said:
“Therefore, strengthen your brethren in all your
conversation, in all your prayers, in all your exhortations,
and in all your doings.”
We should— enlighten, edify, lift, motivate, elevate, build and uplift, in all of our conversations and doings.
“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your
mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying,
that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”
“Cease to contend one with another;
cease to speak evil one of another.…
Let your words tend to edifying one another.”
That gives us all the more reason to be uplifting and positive. Profane words never edify.
There is some value in this expression: “I shall return again, for I like myself more when I am with you.”
The Lord’s counsel is very clear: “Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.” (Isa. 28:23.)
Do we really listen as we read the scriptures? Do we really hear his voice, hearken, and do his will? There are many who do hear and follow him.
Self-control is an effective quality that lifts anyone above the crowd; a memory of a self-controlled person will always be pleasant. We should never lower our dignity by lowering our language in speech, in our texting or on social networks. We don’t ever repeat a profane comment made by someone else. In the text Teaching—No Greater Call we read this regarding self-mastery:
“The height of a man’s success is gauged by his self-mastery; the depth of his failure by his self-abandonment. There is no other limitation in either direction. And this law is the expression of eternal justice. He who cannot establish a dominion over himself will have no dominion over others, he who masters himself shall be king.”
Shouldn’t we all have mastery over our tongues and words all of the time, and only elevate and edify?
Ted E. Brewerton
On a personal note, I remember when I was in Fort Ord, California as a soldier being trained to fight in the Viet Nam War. The drill sergeant chose a Platoon Captain from among us whose responsibility was to make sure we all got up on time each morning and got to bed on time in the evening.
He was only 17, one of the youngest men, physically well built, and yet, used the most vulgar and crude language when waking us up!
At the end of our Basic Training and Active Infantry Training, we were about to receive our orders as to where we would be sent to serve. I remember him coming up to me and saying, “Osmond, could I talk to you? I said, “Sure!”. He said, “Alone?”
I looked around and said, “Let’s go into the barracks.”
We went in the barracks where it was just the two of us and I just let him talk.
He said, “I noticed that you say your prayers at night. You really believe there is someone up there, don’t you? I said, “Oh yes!” He said, “I wish I knew that somebody loved me. Ever since I was five years old, my father made me go out onto the streets of New York and steal, just to stay at home.”
(I just listened and let him keep talking.)
He paused and then said, “Would you teach me how to pray?
I said, “I will”. I reassured him that we all have loving Heavenly parents above and that they care about each and every one of us. I taught him the basics of how to pray and said, ” I will say a prayer first, and then you can say a one.”
We both knelt down on our knees by the bunk and I said the first prayer to show him the basic steps and how to address our Heavenly Father, to thank Him, to ask for what I wished, and then to close in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
I said a short first prayer, and then he said a very humble and short, yet most sincere prayer to his God above and closed in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
We both then stood up and gave each other a bear hug and he said to me with a tear in his eye, “I can now go to ‘Nam’. (Viet Nam).
That was the last time I ever saw him.
I ask that if any of you are like my army friend and use foul language, I encourage you to stop it! It is NOT so much about ‘who you are’ but, ‘who you BECOME’ that counts! Just like my army buddy, we all will one day have to face reality and deal with life with respect and humility. There is ALWAYS someone listening; either here or from up above!

FROM FAN TO A BELIEVER!
By: Karen Kincaid – New Jersey
As most of you might know, I’m a child of the 70’s and a “BIG” Osmond fan. Remember the days of running after buses just to get a glimpse of the boys, or screaming so loud our voices we’re gone for a week. How about finding the hotel they we’re staying at and trying to sneak up the stairs to get on their floor?
Ahhhh the good ole days of our crazy youths, but what fantastic memories we all have had right!!!
I have to tell you, I’m one of the lucky one’s. Making life long friends ( over 40 yrs now ) meeting all the Osmonds & their wives many many times, and YES, growing up to a ripe old age of 53 and becoming personal friends with both Alan & Suzanne.
( Well my bucket list is almost complete ) lol
But seriously, as hard as my life has been since those days of youth, I’ve been blessed in so many other ways.
In the midst of growing up, we’ve all fell in love, married, brought houses, had our babies. But we’ve also suffered tragedies of divorce, losing loved ones or suffered with ailments either big or small. Growing up is a far cry from our wonderful youths we all had isn’t it!!! Sometimes down right stinks!!!!
Well, I’m no different from any of you. I’ve had just as many loses, car accidents, divorce, losing loved one’s. But the hardest thing that hit
was being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
How I suffered for many years of not knowing what it might be, to that final phone call of you have MS. Tough pill to swallow. Like so many of you out there who has received that phone call, the emotions are very much the same.
We first cry, our emotions are so mixed up. Why did this happen to me? What did I do in my life to deserve this? I’ve been through so much in my life and now what do i do. Then it’s the anger. God why did you do this to me, haven’t i suffered enough through my life. Then we go through yet another emotion and that’s acceptance. Well, here it is, I have MS. Nothing can be done. I have it so i might as well deal with it.
All in all, our mind and bodies go through some heavy changes. You find yourselves running around like lunatics finding that perfect Dr. to give you that magic pill you long for. You get your prescription in hopes you would feel so much better because now, not only do you have the original ailment, there’s a part of you that’s not feeling up to par. So i bet like all of you, you went through what i went though & went back to the Dr. for yet another prescription, but this time he wants you to see someone else. OK so now i have two so called magic pills and another Dr.
OK, so you go to yet another Dr. because the first Dr. told you to do so only to have two more meds added to the two you already had making it 4 prescriptions!! But yet, for some reason you find yourself feeling a little worse then when you first started out. So now you go back to the first Dr. but this time he orders tests and hands you yet another pill!! ………
Now your on your roller coaster ride. So now after months of different Dr’s, and countless amount of tests, you find yourself feeling no better then you did when you first started out, the only thing that changed was the “date”.
Well, i fell into such a pattern. But because i have 7 lesions on the brain from the MS, i felt myself going into this big black hole i just couldn’t get out of.
Depression was now a part of my life yet again with no help in sight. You wind up sleeping in more and more, and when you finally do get up, you walk around in circles saying, why did i wake up. You stay in your pj’s maybe wanting to look at the days mail or sit back down to turn the channels on the TV a few 1000 times, in hopes tomorrow things will be better. Yea that’s it, tomorrow. But in my world TOMORROW NEVER CAME.
All the things i loved from cooking, baking, crafts just went to the waist side only because tomorrow never came.
(Are you finding yourself in my words yet? )
I thought for sure with all the pills I was on, I would at least have a glimmer of light. I still was in a black hole, I was still having back pain from surgeries, I was still depressed. And believe me, this went on for years not months.
I’m not really sure when it hit me, maybe an infomercial in the middle of the night, but better late then never. VITAMINS!!!!! That’s it, i’m lacking vitamins. It has to be the answer. I went to see so many Doctors and now to the point of seeing physiologists, it was vitamins i was lacking. That’s it I’m cured……. ( well hardly )
Having the world at my finger tips i did some research and i found a vitamin for everything i was going through. Gee before i knew it, i was taking a total of 30.
Hey, if your big toe hurt, take this vitamin, if your fingernails we’re sore, take a vitamin. Oh yea, i cornered the market. But what i didn’t read anywhere was “ARE YOU TAKING TO MANY” Well that’s where the fear came in. If i give up this one, will i start feeling low again? Or what about this one. Well maybe I’ll keep these 10 and get rid of ………… NO, can’t do that, how about do this and….. well no I need this one. And there you have that vicious circle once again.
It was only until sometime in October of 2015, i realized my morning breakfast consisted of 30 vitamins that didn’t seem to be doing much for me any longer.
So once again here goes the thought process. Maybe i need more, but do i really want to be taking more then 30. It always seemed after taking all of them i would feel sick at least an hour afterwards, hummm now what to do???
Well it happened, Alan posted something on his face book talking about a wellness product called Melaluca. Now knowing Alan suffers from MS, maybe he would know a little something more then i would ever know. Let’s face it guys, those who have followed the Osmonds through the years knows their energy level. So, i did it!!
I decided to know more about these wellness products. In fact, i needed to know all about these wellness products.
And then it happened, my phone rang and who was on the other line no other than Alan & Suzanne Osmond!! WHAT!! We chatted about the old days and what wonderful fun we had, and it didn’t take long to fess up of the fact of how I was feeling. I complained about the 33 surgeries I had, the 3 more I was going in for, the pain I was suffering with my back after having a 2 rods and a plate put in, and the 30 some odd vitamins i was taking. OH BOY, was i hit between the eyes.
At this point Alan was no longer Alan Osmond, he was no longer the famous brother i dearly loved through the years, he now became a friend, a mentor, someone who truly cares about you. He explained what some of the products Melaluca had to offer and what it did for him, but then decided to add his lovely bride to the mix.
Suzanne heard the conversation we we’re having and told me how she too suffered with her back and what a product called “Replenex” did for her. At this point i was excited but like everyone else i was skeptical. Now keep in mind, i had my second back surgery in August of 2014 so here it is November of 2015 i still was suffering. So was i getting my hopes up yet again for a magic pill???
Well it didn’t sound like Suzanne was pulling my leg about what it did for her, and Alan surely sounded like it help him with his MS, so OK……. I tried everything else, let’s do it!!
Well Alan signed me up and i was able to look at the couple of products Suzanne mentioned, i placed my order for the The Replenex and also the Peak Performance multi pack and to my surprise 3 days later right at my front door.
OK, so this is impressive.
Once i opened the box I made a promise to myself I would only try it for one month. If it doesn’t work, i go back to my 30 vitamins. Soooooo hear i go. I closed up my “BIG” vitamin holder tucked away all the reserved bottles and started a beginning i never knew possible.
Funny how i didn’t even notice right away i wasn’t having back pain, in fact i never really noticed i didn’t have energy. It really took me two weeks to realize i was able to get things done with my business, the holiday, house, shopping, well everything.
But then it hit me, I don’t have any back pain!!! This can’t be possible ( saying to myself ) How do you go for years with back pain, have 2 major surgeries, and yet suffer yet another 15 month with it not to have it???? Well, i got the answer….. It was mind over matter. That’s right, I finally found out how
the brain works……….. “NOT”!
After the third week, it seemed other family members have noticed a very big change. I wasn’t walking around like an “S”, i wasn’t moaning all the time saying my famous words, Ohhh my achen back. I was actually standing upright while others noticed.
I also noticed something else, even tho i always tried having a positive attitude about my situation, it was also apparent my attitude changed about everything else. Now i’m not saying Melaluca has come up with the magic pill, but when your not suffering from major pain all day long, and you find you have the energy you once lost, and things are not as bad as they once seemed, well maybe there’s something in that natural stuff.
OK, so i always knew about nature verses man mad medicines, but what i didn’t know what the “RIGHT” way of doing it was. In this case “less is more”
I do hope you find my story some what laughable & silly. BUT i also hope you find it to be helpful.
I found that not only is Melaluca the leading company in natural vitamins, but 1000’s of other products you use every day in your home. And all natural!! From dishwasher detergent, to laundry detergent, make up to shampoo’s. the list is endless. Guess what, in most cases even much less then your paying now.
So don’t be a Karen, ( oh please, no one wants that ) or should i say, don’t be the Karen she once was. Take the leap of faith, talk with Alan & Suzanne, read all about the products. Watch the short video’s they supply for you. Test it out on one or two things. Sometimes we don’t need a TV ad to tell us what we should buy, be your own advocate. What i can promise you is you won’t be going back to old habits.
I thank you for letting me share this time with you stay healthy & happy as always,
(You can reach Alan & Suzanne Osmond by writing to them at: email@example.com and leave your phone number. Don’t be surprised if they give you a phone call! )

2016 New Years Resolution:
There Are OPPOSITES in ALL THINGS!
We came to this world to know the difference . . .
and to CHOOSE THE WAY we wish to live.
“For behold, my brethren, it is given unto you to judge,
that ye may know good from evil;
and the way to judge is as plain,
that ye may know with a perfect knowledge,
as the daylight is from the dark night.”
Jesus came to show us THE WAY.
“And unto this people thou shalt say,
Thus saith the Lord;
Behold, I set before you the way of life,
and the way of death.”
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life:
no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
“For thus saith the scripture:
Choose ye this day, whom ye will serve.”
You’ve Got The Power To Choose!
“And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew. For I, the Lord God, created all things, of which I have spoken, spiritually, before they were naturally upon the face of the earth. For I, the Lord God, had not caused it to rain upon the face of the earth. And I, the Lord God, had created all the children of men; and not yet a man to till the ground; for in heaven created I them; and there was not yet flesh upon the earth, neither in the water, neither in the air;”
Making Choices for Eternity.
The process is based on the law of the harvest:
THAT WHICH YE SOW, SO SHALL YE REAP!
“Fear not to do good, my sons, for whatsoever ye sow,
that shall ye also reap; therefore, if ye sow good
ye shall also reap good for your reward.”
Doctrine and Covenants 6:33
“Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity,
and sow wickedness, reap the same.”
Moral agency, the freedom to choose, is certainly one of God’s greatest gifts next to life itself. We have the honorable right to choose; therefore, we need to choose the right. This is not always easy.
“For thus saith the scripture:
Choose ye this day, whom ye will serve.”
“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord,
choose you this day whom ye will serve;
whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood,
or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house,
we will serve the Lord.”
WHY ARE WE HAVING SO MANY PROBLEMS TODAY?
“There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven
before the foundations of this world,
upon which all blessings are predicated—
And when we obtain any blessing from God,
it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.”
The reason we are having so may problems today is because of the
seeds of evil which we have sown.
We have NOT kept the promises and Commandments we made to God.
Let’s Get NOIZ (Noisy) and turn this world around!
and … Endure To The End!
We are experiencing a mortal probation now during our turn on earth. In our premortal existence, “all the sons of God shouted for joy” (Job 38:7) as we accepted the great eternal plan of happiness.
We happily anticipated coming to earth to experience opportunities to grow spiritually. “Men are, that they might have joy” (2 Ne. 2:25).
The opportunity is here and now to obtain happiness that extends beyond our earth life; however, we need to know what it is and where to find it.
The gospel of Jesus Christ is a simple, ever-present source of true happiness today and ever after in eternity. It is living the gospel of Jesus Christ that is our guarantee of living “happily ever after.
May our 2016 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION THIS YEAR BE:
